2013 Honda Accord Attempts Tough Balancing Act

The all-new 2013 Honda Accord is at present being honed, tweaked and refined in efforts to put the spark back into the carmaker’s reputation among US motorists. Early images of the 2013 Accord have already made their onto the web, as the company prepares to do battle with industry heavyweights including the 2013 Nissan Altima, Toyota Camry and the mighty Ford Fusion.

In order to earn a lead over the competition, Honda will have to afford the 2013 Accord more than just a few stylish tweaks and touches here and there. However, the Japanese auto giant has already admitted that efforts are being made not to be too heavy-handed with the new 2013 Accord, having learned lessons following the launch of the overly-modified 2012 Honda Civic.

According to company executives, the 2013 Honda Accord will be a “well-balanced product that is the best overall product in everything, whether we’re talking about interior packaging, content of the vehicle, the fuel economy of the vehicle.”

Motorists have also been advised to prepare for an Accord that is “One of the most feature-rich vehicles we’ve ever made.”

Honda-devotees across the US have voiced their concerns as to how well the company will be able to strike the necessary balance of incredible advancement without going overboard. Should the 2013 Honda Accord launch as a basic and predictable evolution of the current model, it will most likely struggle to compete with market-leaders from Ford, Kia and Hyundai.

However, the Accord certainly has a strong legacy to fall back on and initial demand is expected to be high.

Even at this moment, Honda’s according remains America’s fourth biggest-selling auto, falling behind only its sibling Honda Civic, the Nissan Altima and the unstoppable Toyota Camry.

The 2013 Honda Accord has some big shoes to fill, but one heck of a fan-base to capitalize on.

Details Leak on New 2013 Honda Accord

Dealer discloses key updates -- including hybrid secrets.

The auto industry usually isn’t good at keeping secrets, though Honda has been struggling to keep a wrap on plans for the critical 2013 update of the midsize Accord.  But details have begun to leak out, including some recent spy shots and, now, a list of ’13 updates that one of the Japanese maker’s dealers is revealing in a press release of its own.

Apparently, the folks at Tuscon’s Chapman Honda have decided that the best way to move the outgoing Accords on their lot is by giving customers a preview of the new car.  That’s a sharp shift from traditional strategy.  Usually, retailers like to pretend nothing’s coming before they clear out inventory.

“We’re confident that drivers will find that the 2013 Accord is a very well-balanced product…whether they’re talking about interior packaging, content of the vehicle, or the fuel economy,” said Chapman Honda General Manager Neb Yonas in a press release.

Among the details provided by the dealership, it appears the 2013 Honda Accord will include:

• “Niceties” (like) Bluetooth;
• SMS audio text functionality,
• Pandora radio with iPhone interface “all bundled together with a Multi-Information Display (i-MID) system.”

The release also notes that the 2013 Accord “comes standard with ECO Assist vehicle efficiency system “which is a super-efficient mode to maximize fuel-efficiency.”

The dealership adds some more specifics to what Honda has already said about the three powertrains coming for the 2013 Accord.  The DOHC base inline-four will be direct-injected and make 181 horsepower and 177 lb-ft of torque.  It will be paired with either a 6-speed stick or Honda’s new CVT.

There will be an optional 3.5-liter V-6 that “will be more powerful and more efficient than the current engine.”

And a hybrid will follow early in calendar 2013 using a 2.0-liter I-4 mated to a 120 kilowatt electric motor.  The hybrid will migrate to more advanced lithium-ion batteries and in contrast with most conventional hybrids, such as the Toyota Prius or Camry Hybrid models – which are limited to short distances and low speeds in EV mode – the 2013 Accord Hybrid will be capable of 10 miles on battery alone at up to 62 mph.
That is, in fact, only slightly less than what the new and upgraded Prius Plug-in is capable of – and then only after a long charge.

The new Accord, noted Chapman officials, will feature lane departure warning, forward collision warning and LaneWatch blind spot alert while a backup camera will now become standard on all new Accord models.

Not surprisingly, after disclosing all the things will get it is now trying to clear out the old 2012 models with a $199 fire sale.

We have to wonder if anyone will be fired for saying more than Honda had planned.  The maker staged a limited preview of an Accord Coupe Concept during the Detroit Auto Show last January – to mixed reviews – but rumors that a sedan concept might then appear at the New York Auto Show in April proved false.

Honda has traditionally been a close second to the best-selling Toyota Camry in the midsize market but Accord has been losing momentum lately, Nissan now in the number two spot with its Altima.  And with an all-new Altima about to launch, Nissan CEO Carlos Ghosn has proclaimed a goal of toppling Toyota, as well.

While it’s too early to see how that battle will shake out there’s no question competition in the midsize market is rapidly heating up.  Along with the new Accord and Camry, Ford is preparing to launch the striking new 2013 Fusion while Chevrolet will soon add the rest of its new Malibu line.  It has already launched the high-mileage Malibu Eco.

Perhaps there’s reason for the Tucson dealer to be trying to drum up new business now?

Even more 2013 Honda Accord Spyshots (Exterior and Interior)

Let me introduce you to my friend Manual...

Our spy shooters have once again snared the 2013 Honda Accord in their sights. Though we’ve seen the car’s exterior several times by now, our photographers managed to get a look inside the new Honda midsizer this time.

We’ve already seen the sedan with its roofline exposed, spied the plug-in hybrid version, and even caught a Honda Accord coupe out testing. This time, however, our spy shooter finally got a peek inside the car.

The first interesting item to notice is the manual transmission used in this prototype. Although the Accord has long offered the option to shift for yourself, we’re pleased to see visual confirmation that option will continue in the latest generation of Honda’s midsize sedan and coupe. As is the case now, though, manual-transmission Accords will likely be extremely rare.

The next change is an interior revamp, starting with a new instrument cluster matching that of the 2012 Honda CR-V. Instead of the old Accord’s pair of dials, the 2013 model gets a large central speedometer, with a digital display in its center. At the left is a smaller analog tachometer, while the right-hand edge of the cluster appears to hold a fuel gauge. In addition, Honda has thankfully simplified and tidied the new car’s center stack. As on the 2012 CR-V, air vents now flank the audio and climate controls, which are arranged in tidy straight rows. The current Accord’s center stack has a glut of buttons arranged on a convex piece of plastic.

The important piece of news for audiophiles is the presence of a new infotainment system that has Pandora internet radio capability. A larger screen is mounted atop the dashboard clearly shows that Honda’s test drivers were enjoying the Celine Dion station on Pandora. Small icons at the top of the display indicate that, as is the case on almost any new car, Bluetooth connectivity is included.

The 2013 Honda Accord bowed in concept form at the Detroit auto show in January. The automaker has so far divulged that the base engine in the 2013 Accord will be a revised 2.4-liter inline-four with 181 hp, which can be mated to a continuously variable or six-speed manual transmission. An optional 3.5-liter V-6 will produce at least 271 hp, and can be coupled to a six-speed automatic or six-speed manual transmission.

The 2012 Honda Accord is offered with two engines: a 177-hp, 2.4-liter inline-four that could be mated to either a five-speed manual or five-speed automatic transmission; and a 271-hp, 3.5-liter V-6 available with a six-speed manual or five-speed automatic.

The 2013 Honda Accord is expected to launch this fall.

DEATH VALLEY, California — Prototypes of the 2013 Honda Accord were caught during hot-weather testing prior to the car's anticipated launch this fall. Although still covered in heavy camouflage, the sedan and coupe test mules clearly showed that the design of the new Honda Accord won't stray far from the concept shown earlier this year.

Notable design elements that can be seen here include a sharply defined character line on the side of the car that plunges from the rear door handle down to the front wheel opening, rectangular headlights with a row of LED marker lights across the bottom and a sizable front airdam opening below the trapezoidal grille.

A quick peek through the window also revealed a few details about the interior design of the 2013 Honda Accord. The gauge cluster looks like it will switch to a large centrally located speedometer flanked by auxiliary gauges on each side. The Accord will continue to use a large in-dash monitor, but the control unit below will switch to a central control knob design similar to Audi's MMI layout. This should reduce some of the button clutter that plagued the design of the dashboard in the current model.

Honda has already announced that the Accord will offer three different drivetrains. The base four-cylinder will be a new direct-injected, DOHC engine that will deliver 181 horsepower and 177 pound-feet of torque. It will be paired with either a six-speed manual transmission or a continuously variable transmission (CVT).

A 3.5-liter V6 will be optional, but Honda has only said that it will be more powerful and more efficient than the current engine. In early 2013, a plug-in hybrid variant will be added to the model lineup. It will combine a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine with a 120kW electric motor powered by lithium-ion batteries. Honda says it will be capable of travelling up to 10 miles in pure electric mode at speeds up to 62 mph.

Inside Line says: Judging by the looks of these prototypes, Honda will continue to play it right down the middle when it comes to the design of its midsize coupe and sedan.

Honda: 2013 Accord one of 'most feature-rich vehicles we've ever made'

Honda watchers counting on a restyled 2013 Accord to reignite the Japanese automaker's sales spark in the United States may be disappointed by the first spy images emerging of the sedan.

Photographs captured this week show the mid-sized sedan with only evolutionary changes from its previous design. In a segment that will be filled with several bold redesigns by next spring -- the Toyota Camry, Volkswagen Passat, Nissan Altima, Chevrolet Malibu, Ford Fusion and Mazda6 -- the Accord could find itself fighting for a seat at the head of the table.

In engineering the new Accord, Honda executives say they learned their lesson when they removed too much content on the redesigned 2012 Civic.

"You're going to find that Accord is a very well-balanced product that is the best overall product in everything, whether we're talking about interior packaging, content of the vehicle, the fuel economy of the vehicle," Erik Berkman, head of research and development for Honda Americas, told Bloomberg News in a recent interview.

It "will be one of the most feature-rich vehicles we've ever made," Berkman added, without elaborating.
The new Accord is expected to go on sale early this fall.

A merely evolutionary design change to the Accord could spell trouble when the competition is making huge jumps in styling, especially the Ford Fusion with its Aston Martin-like lines.

Hyundai and Kia have also gained ground in the U.S. market with radically designed mid-sized sedans.
The 2013 Accord is the last of four core models Honda will introduce over a 24-month period. An all-new Odyssey minivan went on sale in late 2010, followed by the new Civic compact last spring and the revamped CR-V in late 2011.

The four models accounted for nearly 80 percent of the Honda brand's U.S. sales last year.

Accord sales last year fell to 235,625 units, representing a 17 percent decline, although a big chunk of the decline was tied to earthquake-related parts shortages.

But it's still a long way from previous years when the Accord produced annual sales of nearly 400,000 units.
Last year, the rival Nissan Altima became the second-best selling car in the United States after the Toyota Camry.

So far in 2012, the Accord is the fourth best-selling car in America, after the Camry, Altima and Honda Civic.

The revamped Accord will feature Honda's new "Earth Dreams" family of engines and related technology, including continuously variable transmissions, the automaker's first such powertrain change in a decade.
Honda previously used CVTs only on small cars made in Japan.

Starting with the 2013 Accord, the new transmission, with an infinite number of gear ratios, will replace the current five-speed automatic to aid fuel-economy and performance.

The CVT will be the only automatic offered in the Accord four-cylinder, but the V-6 will come with a traditional geared transmission.

The engine line, with displacement ranges from 660 cubic centimeters to 3.5 liters, is being added to every new Honda model starting with the Accord.

2013 Honda Accord Sedan prototype Spotted out testing

Well now we have some spyshots of a different front end of the Next Gen Honda Accord from the plug in Hybrid version that we've seen before. This would appear to confirm that Honda is making the Hybrid version and the regular Accord with different 'faces', although, if I were Honda, I'd put the same front end on the test mules to hide the redesign....

Honda used this year’s Detroit Auto Show to introduce the Accord Coupe Concept, a vehicle that prepared the world for the upcoming 2013 Accord. Now, our spy shooter have caught a prototype of the new-generation Accord while it was out testing.

As you can see in the adjacent images, the production vehicle will inherit some of the features from the concept, while others will be left out. For example the front grille now looks like that on the Accord Crosstour. We can see that the designers have gifted the car with a ducktail spoiler. an element meant to boost its personality.

However, the over-the-top braking system of the concept would be to expensive for the production car, so this will have to make due with a more conventional one. The vehicle is still covered in camouflage, so we still have to wait in order to find out more details about its looks.

2013 Honda Accord Spyshot Compared to Honda Concept C Front End

Well, there are no denying the similarities between the Honda Concept C and the recent spyshot of the 2013 Honda Accord Plug In Hybrid caught testing in California.  There's some heavy speculation that Honda is going to be putting a different face onto the Hybrid version from the normal Accord (a la Hyundai Sonata Hybrid), however I for one don't believe that Honda would do that (at lease to any dramatic degree).

Anyway, I love the front end of the spyshot and I think this is the shot in the arm that the Accord needs.

Spied: 2013 Honda Accord Plug-In Hybrid Spotted in California

Nice, less and less camo....

Last week we showed you spy photos of the next-generation 2013 Honda Accord, caught out in the wild, but heavily camouflaged from the windows down. That left us speculating as to what exactly Honda had in store for its new Accord sedan.

We may have caught a glimpse over the weekend near Honda’s Torrance, California, headquarters. Doing some late-night testing, this gold-painted and lightly camouflaged Honda sedan sports a couple of things we couldn’t see last week. First, the nose appears radically different here, and much more similar to the Honda Concept C shown earlier this year at the Beijing Auto Show. It also goes against our impression of last week’s photo, which didn’t appear to have any of the “jowls” of the Accord Coupe Concept or the Crosstour Concept, both of which were shown at U.S. auto shows earlier this year.

So what gives? Two possible explanations. First, the car shown here is clearly a plug-in prototype, judging from the extra “fuel” door on the front left fender. So it’s possible that Honda will be giving its plug-in model more radical styling than the standard gasoline-powered models, similar to how competitor Hyundai saved its cooler styling for the Sonata Hybrid. The other explanation is that Honda simply had an older-style nose on the car from last week, in an effort to throw off spy photographers.

Either way, we’ll get a closer look at the 2013 Honda Accord in a few months when the car is officially revealed for the first time.

2013 Honda Accord Sedan Spyshots

While many think the Honda Accord has lost its way since the 1990s, the car continues to sell very well, finding a sweet spot of style, performance, and function for many drivers. The 2013 model looks to update the car with a fresher, more dramatic take on the Accord's proportions and theme.

Previewed by the Accord Coupe Concept at the 2012 Detroit Auto Show, the new car looks rather similar to the current Accord, but at the same time, blends its elements more harmoniously, presenting a more refined, modern look.

The spy shots show a car that's still heavily clad in camouflage, however, keeping the changes from the Accord Coupe Concept to the production sedan from our view. Given Honda's affinity for showing barely-disguised production models as concepts, however, we have every reason to think that what's under the covers will closely resemble the Detroit concept.

Information on what sort of interior design changes, technology upgrades, or powertrain improvements might be in order remains closely held, however.

The 2013 Honda Accord is expected to arrive in dealer lots later this year, with the sedan preceding the coupe by several months to a year.

Honda Concept S and Concept C show Chinese style

I have to say that this closer look at the Concept S makes me appreciate it much more, and the Concept C is just gorgeous, I really hope that this is the direction of the next Honda Accord for North America!

Honda, in an effort to match Toyota’s triple concept outing in Beijing, premiered two concept vehicles developed for the Chinese market, called the Concept C and Concept S.

The names sound rather sedate upon first glance, but the C in this case stands for China and also Challenge and Cool, while the S translates into Stylish, Smart and Surprise, the company says.

Nothing too boring about the looks though, with the Concept C looking very much like a stretched and sleeked-out Accord on steroids – that dramatic front end won’t probably see the light of day in the production model, but much of the concept looks workable. Honda is set to develop the Concept C into a production model sometime next year.

Meanwhile, no mistaking the intent of the Concept S, a people mover in the mould of the Stream, but with more swoops and curves. Designed from the start as a hybrid offering, the Concept S will arrive in Chinese showrooms in 2013, produced and sold by Dongfeng Honda.

It won’t stop there – while the Concept S may have been developed with China as its primary market in mind, the vehicle is set to expand its presence by becoming a global offering in 2014.

Beijing Auto Show Honda Concept C Mid-Size Sedan in line for the Chinese Market

Hmmm....is this the direction that the North American Honda Accord is going to take?
BEIJING, China, April 23, 2012 - Honda Motor (China) Investment Co., Ltd. today exhibited at the 2012 Beijing Motor Show the world premiere of the Concept C and the Concept S, two concept models that show the direction of mass-production models Honda will introduce to the market next year. Concept C
Concept C is a concept model for a middle-class sedan Honda is developing specially for the Chinese market. The "C" represents "Cool," "Challenge," and "China." The Concept C features a stately, distinctive and sporty design that was inspired by the image of a dragon. The product planning for this model was led by Honda's Chinese associates and the development was done through cooperation between development teams in China and Japan. Honda is planning to introduce a mass-production model based on this Concept C next year through Guangqi Honda Automobile Co., Ltd.

Honda Teases Two New Concepts For 2012 Beijing Auto Show

Hmmm.... is this a concept drawing of the next gen Honda Accord????
Honda has announced it will unveil two new concept cars at the 2012 Beijing Auto Show taking place later this month.

The automaker states that the concepts are a preview for models focused on Chinese customers and that their Beijing appearance will be their official world premiere.

Along with the announcement, Honda released these two teaser sketches which show the outline of a sedan and a hatchback.

Comparing the sketches with previously revealed concept and production models from Honda, it’s likely that the sedan concept is a preview of the Chinese market 2013 Honda Accord, which Honda has already previewed with a coupe concept in U.S. specification at the 2012 Detroit Auto Show.

The hatchback concept, meanwhile, appears to share many lines with the European market Honda Civic and is likely to be a preview of the Chinese version.

No other details have been released so we’ll have to wait until the 2012 Beijing Auto Show’s April 23 opening day.

Sharing Honda’s stand at the show will be the CR-Z, Insight and Fit Hybrid, while the upmarket Acura division will be showing off the NSX supercar concept and new ILX and RDX models.

Honda has also confirmed that the new Acura NSX will be sold in China once the car is launched in around three years, while the upcoming RLX flagship sedan will launch next year.

Car and Driver: A look at the 2013 Honda Accord

What It Is: The ninth generation of the longest-running 10Best winner. Unlike many of  its mid-size competitors, the Accord will continue to be offered as a coupe and a sedan. Slightly smaller and lighter than the current Accord, the new version also will have softer lines and more cohesive styling.

Why It Matters: This Accord will be as important to Honda as anything it’s done in the past decade. Will it be able to beat the growing range of exceptional mid-size competitors? Will it have the magic feel of previous Accords? Will Honda get its size right? Will it deliver Honda-style innovation and fuel economy? The new Accord needs to answer these questions in the affirmative.

Platform: The new Accord likely  will be based on an updated version of  the current car’s architecture.

Powertrain: While many mid-size competitors are dropping their six-cylinder options, the Accord will offer a revised and more powerful version of its familiar 3.5-liter V-6 with cylinder deactivation. But the bread-and-butter Accord will be the four-cylinder model. Direct injection helps the 2.4-liter four make at least 181 horsepower and 177 pound-feet of torque, with improved fuel economy. A six-speed manual will be offered; the automatic will be a CVT. A plug-in-hybrid version will couple a 2.0-liter four-cylinder with a 161-hp electric motor.  A 6-kWh lithium-ion battery  will offer 10 to 15 miles of city driving range and will recharge in less than four hours using a standard 120-volt outlet. Three selectable modes will allow the hybrid driver to choose among fully electric, hybrid, and “direct drive,” which decouples the electric motor for more efficient cruising.

What Might Go Wrong: The conservatively styled and engineered Civic has us wondering if the Accord will suffer the same fate. After seeing the new Accord coupe in concept form at the Detroit auto show in January, the threat of dullness remains.

Estimated Arrival and Price: The two- and four-door Accords arrive this fall. Pricing is expected to remain in the $20,000-to-$30,000 range for the vast majority of the lineup. A well-equipped hybrid and a loaded V-6 model will crest $30,000.
