Honda to launch diesel cars in India by 2012

For a long time cars like Honda City and Honda Civic have been favourites and churned up good figures.

But recently there has been a flood of new launches that have posed a serious threat to the almost monopolistic models by Honda.

Cars like Volkswagen Vento and Fiat Linea are some of the biggest challengers to the supremacy of Honda City, one of Honda's higgest selling models.

Also, till now there has been no diesel car launched by Honda, which is one of its disadvantages.

However, this is about to change as Honda Siel Cars India will launch two diesel engine options by 2012.

According to sources Honda would bring the diesel engine to India after its launch in Europe and it would be fitted into cars like City, Jazz and the new small car Honda is developing.

The engine is a new 2.0 litre CRDI diesel unit.

Right now Honda offers Honda Accord and the Honda CR-V in 2.2 litre diesel versions in the overseas market.

And diesel engine variants are important on the portfolio of every carmaker wanting to make it big in the Indian market as Indian buyers buy more diesel cars than petrol.

The current Honda portfolio includes cars like CR-V, City, Civic, Accord and Jazz.

Out of these three cars are likely to get the new diesel engine.

The car is available in three variants out of which Honda City 1.5 E MT and Honda City 1.5 S MT are equipped with 1.5L, 1497cc, i-VTEC petrol engine with the 5-speed manual transmission gearbox that is able to produce 118PS power at 6600rpm and 14.9Kg-m torque at 4600rpm.

The Honda City 1.5 S AT too has the same engine and specification and it has automatic transmission gearbox.

The Honda City is priced between 833,500 - 997,500 (ex-showroom, New Delhi).

Honda displayed a concept small car, which is yet unnamed, at the Auto Expo in January this year and is planning to launch it in India by 2011.

The small car is expected to have a 1200 cc engine and is expected to have all the necessary features including airbags, ABS and G-CON body standards, which keep the integrity of the passenger cabin intact in an accident.

Honda has decided to price the small car below 500,000 to be able to compete with Maruti Suzuki Swift and Hyundai i20.

The small car will have over 80 per cent local components to save on the cost of spare parts.

Honda India (ONLY) Honda's small car to be launched after mid 2011

Finally, Honda has got an answer for the mass market. Yes, Honda, the Japanese Auto Giant, is preparing to launch a small car with a 1.2 L petrol engine during the later half of 2011 in India.

According to Jnaneswar Sen, vice-president (marketing) of Honda Siel Cars India Ltd, Honda is developing the small car in Japan and the car will be produced in our country at the Noida facility.

Honda small car's starting price will be less than Rs. 5 lakh. In order to provide this price, Honda will be looking out for maximum localisation of this car's components. Honda's Jazz has got 77 percent local parts, new City has got 76 percent local parts, Honda Civic has got 74 percent local parts and the company's luxury sedan, Honda Accord has got 74 percent local parts.

Honda will not launch LPG, CNG or diesel variants for the small car because, Honda doesn't have the technology with them globally. Honda's new plant in Rajasthan, will help the company to produce more cars. The Noida factory of the company is now producing 60,000 cars and has the capacity to produce 1 lakh cars.

Honda is likely to strengthen its dealer network in India before the launch of small car, so as to easily access wider audience. The company hopes that the small car will fuel Honda's sales volume and 2010 will be the time for ground work and consoidation.

Honda has learned hard lessons with its Jazz, that bombed in the market, due to its high price. Now, if Honda could achieve maximum localisation of its small car parts and price the car competitively, Honda can easily grab a considerable share in the small car segment of the country.

Honda's Global Small Concept

Toyota's Etios is on the attack, but that has not kept heir-apparent Honda from bringing out its own saber. The Honda Global Small Concept will not just defend Japan's no. 2, but may also get it into a coup-de-grace position
It is like fencing, this game of domination between the two Japanese bigwigs - Honda and Toyota. While the world's biggest car maker has often been on higher ground around the world, and Honda has been playing the aggressor. In India however, Honda SIEL's headstart has paid off well not only in terms of its portfolio and profits, but also by developing it into a trusted, popular and more prolific brand than Toyota. Clearly, since the underdog is often better placed to attack, Toyota has lunged for contact at the Auto Expo with the Etios hatchback and sedan concepts. But like any seasoned fencer, Honda had its safe yet graceful parry - the Global Small Concept.

Glued together just in the nick of time to make it the Expo, the GSC managed to steal some of the limelight away from Toyota nevertheless - on proud display in the same hall as the Etios. The decision to bring the mock-up to New Delhi was taken less than a month before the show kicked off, and the car entered India barely three days before the Expo was opened. While the Etios carried on in the same Toyota vein of being non-controversial, all-encompassing and plain but likeable when it came to its design, the Honda smally is replete with aggressive design cues capable of grabbing the eyeballs of any car enthusiast. Be it the insistent alloy wheels, the sharp silhouette or edgy contours, the GSC certainly was the looker at the show.

Speculating thoughtfully about the car, one must not forget that Honda has always taken the fight to Toyota by offering younger, more enthusiast oriented cars throughout its pursuit - be it the Civic which went after the Corolla, or the new Accord which takes on the Camry. . It is likely that the Honda small car will be launched with a 1-litre and a 1.2-litre engine option that already does the duty on the Jazz, and inclusion of the smart iVTEC technology inside the engine will only enhance the car's capabilities without compromising on the practicality expected from a small car. The inclusion of a CVT transmission option, the way it appears on the Thai Honda Jazz will only enhance and widen the appeal of the car.

The positioning of the car is expected to be bang in the territory of the venerable Maruti Suzuki Swift, the car that revolutionized the way India looked at hatchbacks. Since the Jazz already covers the higher spectrum of the price range, this would be a much more reasonable but an equally cut-throat space to function in, especially after the introduction of the Volkswagen Polo, Ford Figo, Nissan Micra and the Toyota Etios, which would have hit the market before this small number from Honda makes its entry. But more importantly, the revealing of the concept shoulder to shoulder with that of the Etios concept at the Expo needs to be read into carefully. The production car may still be two years away, but this is a sign that Honda is ready to fend off Toyota's intrusion with fleet feet and panache.
