Honda to consider more towards the safety of their cars

Honda has recently given a statement that they are going to make their cars safer for the people. Honda is not considering this action because their cars has absence of any safety features in them, but they are considering it in order to keep the people safe while driving their cars.

The company has officially announced in the last month that they are shortly going to make their cars best in terms of safety. The company has decided to consider two important features in their cars so that they can keep the person inside safe, especially in case of any mishappening occurred by the mistake of the driver.

Honda CEO announced in a press conference last week that every year huge number of people lost their life because of cars accidents all over the world, and the features they have decided to load in their cars will surely contribute in keeping the people safe.

One feature Honda has decided to load in their cars is making their car not usable for the drug users. Company said that this doesn’t mean that the person who takes drugs in the past cannot drive their cars, but actually they are loading their cars with such a feature that doesn’t allow the engine to start if the driver has used drugs or wine just before driving their any car. Company is sure that this is something that will highly contribute in decreasing the overall number of car accidents. Company said that when car will not start in such a case, the driver cannot drive it and thus no accidents will occur.

According to Honda, they are designing such a system that will check the level of drugs or alcohol in the body when a person will touch the start button, and if the level of alcohol or drugs inside the body of driver is beyond the limit when it is not considered as safe, the car will not start.

The second feature at which the company is focusing is to increase the size of air bags. Company said that till now the airbags that are available in cars for the safety of people inside it are not able to cover entire body of the person. However they will extent the size of airbags in their cars which keeps the entire body of the person inside the car totally safe when any accident or mishappening occurs.

When company was asked that when they will introduce their cars that are loaded with these powerful features, they said that it has not finalized and now they cannot even give a nearby date when these features will be available in their cars.

Honda said that no other company has decided to introduce there important features in their cars, but they are sure that once they will load their cars with these features, others automakers will also consider these features for their cars. Honda said that if all automakers will consider these features, then car accidents occurred because of drunk and rive can be avoided totally.

Honda Fit Crashes into G55 AMG: Mercedes Rolls Over

Logic would suggest that a large SUV packing an all-mighty V8 engine under the bonnet and sheetmetal tough enough for the German army would smash straight through any sort of compact car.

But once in a while, something happens that blows logic out of the water and makes you rethink your safety standards. Car News China reports on just such an accident, between a humble Honda Fit (Jazz) and the mighty Mercedes Benz G55 AMG, which could potentially be twice as heavy as the little Japanese box.

However, the G55’s high center of gravity worked to its disadvantage and it rolled over and landed on its roof. But as a testament to the German engineering, the door pillars did not crumble under the weight of the whole car, and it looks like the glass didn’t break either.

What’s more, the Honda driver was lightly injured, but the G55 driver wasn’t. However, eyewitnesses say the richer of the two ignored a red light, so we can’t say we’re completely satisfied with the result.

New Honda Civic awarded 5 stars by Euro NCAP

The new Honda Civic has been awarded Euro NCAP's maximum 5-star rating, following publication of the safety body's independent crash testing results.
In addition, Euro NCAP have announced that they are extending Honda's Euro NCAP Advanced reward for its Collision Mitigation Braking System (CMBS) technology to include the new Civic.

The rating scheme focuses on the vehicle's overall safety performance which gives consumers an easy to understand single score. The system considers occupant protection, child protection, pedestrian protection and the availability of driver aids. Since the introduction of Euro NCAP's new rating scheme in February 2009, all Honda models tested have achieved 5-stars.

Euro NCAP also announced that they are extending Honda's Advanced NCAP reward for its CMBS technology to include the new Civic. The reward recognises Honda's CMBS technology as amongst the best available safety innovations, offering proven benefits. Euro NCAP Advanced is an initiative developed in response to the rapid development of new safety technologies, for which there is no independent assessment.

Honda's Collision Mitigation Brake System (CMBS) is a radar-based autonomous emergency braking system designed to help prevent collisions with vehicles which are stationary or travelling in the same direction. The system is aimed at alerting the driver to an imminent collision both at low speeds, typical of urban driving, and at higher speeds typical of rural roads and motorways. By studying accident statistics in Germany and extending the figures to the broader European community, Honda estimates that, if all cars were fitted with CMBS, between 200,000 and 250,000 accidents could be either prevented or mitigated every year.

Honda uses its own car-to-car crash test facility at the Tochigi R&D centre allows the Japanese manufacturer to analyse impacts between models of different sizes and weights and develops solutions to mitigate injuries for both passengers and pedestrians. The omni-directional vehicle-to-vehicle crash test facility opened in 2001 and is the world's first indoor facility of its type.

Twelve American Honda Models Earn IIHS TOP SAFETY PICK

Twelve American Honda models, including the all-new 2012 CR-V that goes on-sale today, received the highest possible safety rating of TOP SAFETY PICK from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) under its more-stringent testing guidelines implemented last year.
The IIHS award recognizes vehicles that do the best job of protecting vehicle occupants involved in front, side and rear crashes, plus rollover performance based on ratings in the Institute's tests.

Announced by IIHS today, the Honda Fit, CR-Z, Insight, Accord, CR-V, Pilot and Ridgeline along with the Acura TL, TSX and MDX all earned the highest-possible score of GOOD in all four ratings, including the more rigorous roof-strength test. Euro 2012 Honda Civic Safety Features

Interesting.... I wonder how long it would take for that to come over to the North American models....
Honda released more details on the new and innovative safety features they’ve packed in the new generation Civic.

That is usually the case with all car makers, to boast their products good features ahead of market launch. People will be searching for details of the new model and these info can help them find out if they want a particular model or not.

Anyhow, the new Civic features new stuff that makes it safe not only for the passengers onboard, but also for the pedestrians and cyclists. It has Advanced Compatibility Engineering (ACE) body structure, which is according to Honda: "a front-mounted polygonal frame that is designed to prevent the cabin becoming deformed by distributing forces away from the passenger compartment."

The little hatchback also features a collision avoidance system – Collision Mitigation Braking System (CMBS) – which used to reserved for big, expensive cars. It monitors the distance and closing rate between your vehicle and the car directly in front of it, warning the driver when a collision is likely and helping reduce impact when a collision becomes unavoidable.

The car also comes with a clever pedestrian safety system which include windscreen wiper pivots designed to break away on impact and energy absorbing front wing mounts.

Ford Focus, Honda Civic and Nissan Juke Among I.I.H.S. Top Safety Picks

On Thursday, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety released crash-test results for 13 small cars. Six earned top scores, bringing the total number of small cars named top safety picks by the institute to 22.

The I.I.H.S., which is funded by the insurance industry, also released a list of the 10 small cars that claim top crash-test scores as well as the highest fuel economy ratings in their class.

The six top safety picks consist of 2011 and 2012 models. They are the 2012 Ford Focus and the Honda Civic four-door, as well as the 2011 Hyundai Elantra, the Lexus CT 200h, the Nissan Juke and Toyota Prius.

Other vehicles that were tested but not named top safety picks were the 2011 Dodge Caliber, the Honda CR-Z and Insight, the Nissan Sentra and Versa, the Scion xD and Suzuki SX4.

To earn the top designation, a vehicle must receive a rating of good in all four of the institute’s crash tests: front, side, rear and rollover. Electronic stability control must be available at least as an option. The institute rates on a scale of good, acceptable, marginal and poor.

The Civic, CT 200h, Elantra, Focus and Prius are all produced with at least one model or trim level that achieves an E.P.A. fuel economy rating of at least 40 m.p.g. on the highway.

“The bottom line is that small-car safety is improving, and that many of the most fuel-efficient cars that are available today are now available with very high levels of crash protection, which wasn’t the case a few years ago,” said David Zuby, the institute’s chief research officer, in a telephone interview.

Indeed, most small cars now are equipped with air bags and electronic stability control as standard equipment, and are designed to help protect people better in front, side, rollover and rear-impact crashes.

But the laws of physics still apply, Mr. Zuby noted. People who are more interested in safety than fuel efficiency, for example, would be better served buying a larger car.

When the institute began naming top safety picks with 2006 model-year vehicles, the criteria were less stringent than today. Still, only three small cars — the Honda Civic, Saab 9-2X and Subaru Impreza — received the distinction.

The Hyundai Elantra is an example of the changes that have taken place in this segment. Now a top safety pick, it once earned some of the lowest crash test scores of any passenger vehicles.

The institute also noted that newer small cars achieved substantially better gas mileage than their old models managed.

What prevented 7 of the 13 tested small cars from earning top marks? Five received an acceptable rating in one or more of the tests. They were the Honda CR-Z and Insight, the Nissan Versa and Sentra, and the Scion xD. Meanwhile, the Suzuki SX4 received marginal ratings for rollover and rear protection. The Dodge Caliber also was deemed marginal for side protection, but acceptable in the rollover test.

None of the small cars received a rating of poor in any tests.

IIHS awards Top Safety Pick to 2011 Honda Odyssey, GM Lambda CUVs

Honda minivan and 3 large GM SUV models earn 2011 Top Safety Pick award
After earning the top rating of good for roof strength, the Honda Odyssey minivan, and 3 large GM SUVs (GMC Acadia, Chevrolet Traverse, and Buick Enclave) become the latest 2011 Top Safety Pick winners. The Odyssey is the second minivan to earn Top Safety Pick since the Institute tightened the criteria to include good performance for roof strength in rollover crashes (the other is the Toyota Sienna). These vehicles earlier earned good ratings for front, side, and rear crash protection.

In the latest tests, the roof of the Odyssey withstood a force more than 5 times the minivan's weight. The Acadia's roof withstood a force equal to 4 times weight. By comparison, the current federal standard is 1.5 times weight. Top Safety Pick only applies to Acadia, Traverse, and Enclave models manufactured after January 2011, because GM made running changes to improve roof strength for these models.

In addition to good crash test ratings in all 4 Institute tests, award winners must have electronic stability control (ESC), an important crash-avoidance feature.

Honda Engineer Douglas Longhitano Honored with the SAE

WARRENDALE, Pa., Feb. 10, 2011 — /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Douglas C. Longhitano, senior engineer, Automotive Safety, Honda R&D Americas, Inc., was honored with the SAE International/InterRegs Standards & Regulations Award for Young Engineers during the SAE International 2011 Government/Industry Meeting, held earlier this year in Washington, D.C.

Established in 2000, this award recognizes a practicing engineer under the age of 40 who is involved in standards, regulations or conformity assessment systems which improved safety or reduced emissions in a ground vehicle mobility product. The nominee is required to author a 2,000 word essay detailing how this was achieved.

Since joining Honda in 1997, Longhitano's career has been dedicated to researching methods for mitigating crash related injuries, especially in the area of pedestrian protection. He has authored more than 20 technical publications related to crash injury mitigation and has presented many of his research findings at conferences such as ESV, the SAE World Congress, World Traffic Safety Symposium and SAE International Government Industry Meeting.

Longhitano earned the Ralph Boyer Young Achiever Award from the Ohio State University and the U.S. Government Award for Engineering Excellence from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration for his work automotive safety research. Longhitano is a 15 year member of SAE International and is active on the Human Biomechanics and Simulation Standards Steering Committee as well as the U.S. Technical Advisory Groups to ISO supporting crash injury mitigation related standards. He supports student research as an organizer for the Injury Biomechanics Symposium hosted annually at The Ohio State University and is a member of the Association for the Advancement of Automotive Medicine, the Central Ohio Impact Biomechanics Engineering Consortium, and the Center for Child Injury Prevention Studies - Industrial Advisory Board.

2011 Honda Odyssey Earns Best-Possible 5-Star Overall Vehicle Score in More-Stringent Federal Government Crash Test Safety Rating Program

The all-new 2011 Honda Odyssey has earned the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's (NHTSA's) best-possible Overall Vehicle Score1 of five stars and is one of the first two vehicles ever to earn five stars in each seating position for all three crash tests, each crash test category and the overall rating, American Honda Motor Co., Inc., announced today. The Odyssey joins the 2011 Accord Sedan as one of the few vehicles to date that achieves the federal government's best-possible five-star Overall Vehicle Score and five stars in the combined frontal and side crash safety ratings.

The Odyssey achieved its top Overall Vehicle Score with five-star ratings for the frontal crash safety test and both side crash safety tests2 in all evaluated front and rear seating positions and scenarios. Only new Accord is perfect in crash tests

Five other models had 5-star scores on new safety evaluation
The Honda Accord is the only vehicle to get a perfect score under the government's updated crash-rating system.

The 2011 Accord received an overall score of five stars and also got five stars in all three subcategories: frontal crash, side crash and rollover.

"It reflects a commitment to safety that Honda has had for a long time," said Ron Lietzke, a Honda spokesman. "We have invested a lot toward this commitment because it is so important to our customers."

The Accord is Honda's top-selling vehicle. Most of the Accords sold in North America are built in Marysville. Honda's safety testing takes place at the research and development center in Raymond.

Five other vehicles also received an overall score of five stars: the BMW 5 Series, Buick Enclave, Chevrolet Traverse, GMC Acadia and Hyundai Sonata. But each fell short of a perfect score in at least one category.

About 40 vehicles were tested under the new standards.

"More stars equal safer cars," said Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood when he introduced the system last month. "With our upgraded Five-Star Safety Ratings System, we're raising the bar on safety. Through new tests, better crash data and higher standards, we are making the safety ratings tougher and more meaningful for consumers."

The new rating system involves more-rigorous testing and provides customers with more detailed information, the Transportation Department said.

Honda CR-Z Achieves Top Euro NCAP Overall Safety Rating

The Honda CR-Z has been rated one of Europe‘s safest cars, following on from the success of the Honda Insight, according to the new independent crash testing results from Euro NCAP.

Euro NCAP's rating scheme focuses on the vehicle's overall safety performance which gives consumers an easy to understand single score. The system considers occupant protection in frontal, side, pole and rear impacts, child protection, pedestrian protection and the availability of driver aids. The Honda CR-Z has been awarded the maximum 5-star rating.

The new rating scheme, introduced in February 2009, uses a weighted score, combining many aspects of a car's safety performance: adult (50%), child (20%) and pedestrian (20%) protection assessment results with the availability of safety assistance devices (10%). To qualify for inclusion, safety assistance devices (VSA for Honda) must be fitted as standard across 90% of the EU 27 2010 model range.

The CR-Z is the most recent in a string of Honda cars to receive top marks.Since the introduction of the new rating scheme Euro NCAP have tested 4 other Honda models; Civic, Accord, Jazz and most recently, Insight. All 5 models achieved 5 stars, with the Honda Insight also being named "safest hybrid vehicle" as well as the 2nd safest vehicle tested in 2009.

Vehicle Stability Assist

Vehicle Stability Assist (VSA) is designed to assist the driver in maintaining control during cornering, acceleration and sudden manoeuvres by applying braking assistance to any of the wheels as necessary and modulating the engine torque output as required.

Braking

14" ventilated front and solid rear disc brakes ensure road stability, which is further enhanced by the Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD) and Brake Assist (BA).

Advanced Compatibility Engineering (ACE)

Developed in the car-to-car crash testing facility at Tochigi, the Advanced Compatibility EngineeringTM (ACETM) body structure is now a well-established strength of Honda's safety credentials.

The ACETM body structure is a Honda exclusive body design that enhances occupant protection and crash compatibility in frontal collisions. Pedestrian Protection

The CR-Z also incorporates many features designed with pedestrian-protection in mind. Features include windscreen wiper pivots designed to break away on impact, energy absorbing front wing mounts and bonnet hinges, as well as an unobstructed area beneath the bonnet allowing greater space for deformation.

Airbags and Seatbelts

On all models the driver and passenger Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) front and side airbags are complemented by full length curtain airbags to protect all occupants. There are three-point Emergency Locking Retractor (ELR) seatbelts in all seating positions, the front seatbelts also have 2 stage Energy Absorption (EA) load limiting pretensioners. Additionally in the rear ISOFIX points ensure secure and correct installation mounting of child seats.

Active headrests

The CR-Z is equipped with front seat active headrests which reduce the likelihood of neck injury in rear impacts. As the occupant is pushed against the seat back, a rigid plate in the seat presses a link to the headrest pushing it up and forward to support the head.

Three Mode Drive System

ECON Mode

ECON mode prioritises fuel economy in the operation of the drive-by-wire throttle, ECU, air conditioning and the hybrid system. For those times when spirited driving is not possible or desirable, the Eco Assist function, in conjunction with the ECON mode, allows the driver to enjoy beating their best economy score on the way to work, or in heavy traffic.The ECON mode reduces the sensitivity of the throttle to smooth out inputs and this action is assisted by the use of a different engine map that prioritises fuel economy. The use of the motor to assist the petrol engine is redefined with the priority given to improve fuel economy, not assist performance.The climate control system is also influenced by the ECON mode, by recirculating air and reducing compressor operation in order to reduce energy consumption. In this mode the Idle Stop parameters are dramatically increased which extends the time spent with the engine off.

At all times the car can be run in NORMAL mode, which provides a balance between performance, economy and emissions and suits most driving situations.

Hybrid Cars May Include Fake Vroom for Safety

For decades, automakers have been on a quest to make cars quieter: an auto that purrs, and glides almost silently in traffic.

They have finally succeeded. Plug-in hybrid and electric cars, it turns out, not only reduce air pollution, they cut noise pollution as well with their whisper-quiet motors. But that has created a different problem. They aren’t noisy enough.

So safety experts, worried that hybrids pose a threat if pedestrians, children and others can’t hear them approaching, want automakers to supply some digitally enhanced vroom. Indeed, just as cellphones have ring tones, “car tones” may not be far behind — an option for owners of electric vehicles to choose the sound their cars emit.

Working with Hollywood special-effects wizards, some hybrid auto companies have started tinkering in sound studios, rather than machine shops, to customize engine noises. The Fisker Karma, an $87,900 plug-in hybrid expected to go on sale next year, will emit a sound — pumped out of speakers in the bumpers — that the company founder, Henrik Fisker, describes as “a cross between a starship and a Formula One car.”

Nissan is also consulting with the film industry on sounds that could be emitted by its forthcoming Leaf battery-electric vehicle, while Toyota has been working with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the National Federation of the Blind and the Society of Automotive Engineers on sounds for electric vehicles.

“One possibility is choosing your own noise,” said Nathalie Bauters, a spokeswoman for BMW’s Mini division, who added that such technology could be added to one of BMW’s electric vehicles in the future.

The notion that battery E.V.’s and plug-in hybrids might be too quiet has gained backing in Congress, among federal regulators and on the Internet. The Pedestrian Safety Enhancement Act of 2009, introduced early this year, would require a federal safety standard to protect pedestrians from ultra-quiet cars.

Karen Aldana, a spokeswoman for traffic safety agency, which is also working on the issue, said, “We’re looking at data on noise and E.V. safety, but manufacturers are starting to address it voluntarily.”

A Toyota spokesman, John Hanson, said: “I don’t know of any injuries related to this, but it is a concern. We are moving rapidly toward broader use of electrification in vehicles, and it’s a fact that these cars are very quiet and could pose a risk to unsighted people.”

A study published last year by the University of California, Riverside and financed by the National Federation of the Blind evaluated the effect of sounds emitted by hybrid and internal-combustion cars traveling at 5 miles per hour.

People listening in a lab could correctly detect a gas-powered car’s approach when it was 28 feet away, but could not hear the arrival of a hybrid operating in silent battery mode until it was only seven feet away.

Some electric-vehicle drivers have taken a low-tech approach to alerting pedestrians. When Paul Scott of Santa Monica, Calif., drives his 2002 Toyota RAV4 electric car, he often rolls down the windows along busy streets and turns up his radio so people know his virtually silent vehicle is there.

Mr. Scott, vice president of the advocacy group Plug In America, said he would prefer giving drivers control over whether the motor makes noise, unlike, say, the Fisker Karma, which will make its warning noise automatically.

“Quiet cars need to stay quiet — we worked so hard to make them that way,” he said. “It’s the driver’s responsibility not to hit somebody.”

Mr. Scott has already warmed up to the idea of a car ring tone.

“It should be a manually operated noisemaker, a button on the steering wheel triggering a recording of your choice,” he said. “It could play ‘In-a-Gadda-Da-Vida,’ or anything you like.”

Honda Insight earns Top Safety Pick

Torrance, California - The 2010 Honda Insight EX has earned the highest “Top Safety Pick Award” from the U.S. Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).

The award recognizes vehicles that do the best job of protecting vehicle occupants involved in front, side and rear crashes, based on ratings in IIHS tests.

“Fuel economy and safety have always been part of Honda’s DNA,” said Erik Berkman, vice-president of corporate planning and logistics. “The Insight EX is a great example of an affordable vehicle that receives a high rating for safety.”

TOV Member Survives Crash, Testifies to Honda's Safety for Everyone

Wow, I found this on temple of vtec, where one of their readers was in a hit and run from behind by a Ford F150 and thankfully survived. Here are a few pic's, make sure you follow the link for more....
"Last Thursday I was driving home from Thanksgiving dinner and was hit from behind on the interstate by a truck traveling in excess of 100mph. I was going about 74 from what I remember. I wanted to share these pictures with you of the wreck. I flipped over 4 times according to police. The first officer arriving on scene warned other emergency personnel arriving that it was most likely a fatality wreck. Little did he know I was crawling out through the back window. I am not sure if you wanted to share this with other members of TOV who share the same passion you and I do about Honda. This is a testament to their safety and the ACE Body Structure. I walked away from this with a few minor bruises on my head and side. It is simply a miracle that I am still alive, not to mention the lack of injuries. Attached are pictures taken at the scene by police as well as pictures of the damage, which hardly do it justice. In addition, there is a picture of me in the hospital less than 30 minutes after the wreck giving thumbs up to Honda. "

Honda offers quicker, safer inflating air bag

TOKYO — Honda has developed an air bag that inflates quicker and reduces the impact of a crash, the Japanese automaker said Thursday.

Tokyo-based Honda Motor Co. said its new air bag is the world's first that inflates in stages, mitigating the force of its deployment.

The new air bag will be introduced in the Life minicar, which goes on sale in Japan in November. Overseas sales plans are undecided as regulations vary, especially for the U.S., said senior manager Koichi Kamiji.

Europe may get the air bag as early as next year, he said.

The new air bag inflates to a safe size in 0.015 seconds. Current air bags take 0.030 seconds, according to Honda.

Honda also unveiled a camera system that shows blind-spots for the driver on a car-navigation monitor.

The system, which uses cameras in the front, sides and rear of a vehicle, will be offered in the Odyssey minivan, set to go on sale next month in Japan. Overseas plans are undecided.

Nissan Motor Co. already offers a similar system.
