Burglar tries to break in Judge Lillian Sing's car

This is just pathetic.... I wish the Judicial system would grow some teeth....
Judge Lillian Sing got a taste of judicial medicine the other day when a convicted car burglar she was trying to help walked out of her San Francisco courtroom and, within minutes, was busted for allegedly breaking into her car.
Phillip Bernard was in Community Court on Tuesday for a check of his progress while on probation for an auto burglary conviction.
Bernard, who is homeless, had missed an earlier appearance and had failed to follow his probation requirements. "I wasn't too happy with him," Sing said.
But Community Court is set up to get people help, not send them to jail for minor infractions. So Sing let him off with a stern admonishment.
"I told him he had better get into a harm reduction program and get going with a job search," Sing said.
No sooner did Sing's gavel go down, however, than Bernard exited the Polk Street courtroom, went around to the alley in back, pulled out a weighted sock and smashed the rear passenger window of a car, police said.
As fate would have it, a couple of beat cops were passing by. They nabbed Bernard, ran the car's plate and bingo - up popped the judge's name.
"He did it right under my nose," Sing said.
Bernard, 32, is now back behind bars, facing another auto burglary charge.
His next court date is Tuesday, this time in Superior Court.
As for this validating those who say Community Court is just a revolving door for petty criminals like Bernard?
"He's just one of 1,600 we deal with," Sing said. "Most of them do really well."
Maybe - but this is the one who is going to be remembered.

GM Gets Pranked at Chevy Event

By SHARON TERLEP

DETROIT—General Motors Co. officials were red-faced on Wednesday after software on a network at its headquarters was programmed to insert a derogatory remark on computer browsers after any mention of Chrysler Group LLC and several other competitors.

The prank came to light at GM's unveiling of a battery-powered version of its Chevrolet Spark small car at a five-day event marking the 100th anniversary of GM's Chevrolet brand. The event drew more than 200 journalists from around the world.

Selim Bingol, a GM spokesman, said the auto maker had nothing to do with the prank. GM has since corrected the problem.

GM officials said computer technicians found an unauthorized software program had been installed on a wireless router, and the program was altering the way Web pages were displayed to insert the word "sucks" after any mention of certain rivals on computers linked to the network.

Later in the day, GM said it had identified the culprit—a subcontractor who had helped set up the wireless network. GM didn't identify the company but said the subcontractor had admitted its role and intended the prank to be humorous.

"These guys are learning the definition of sucks," Mr. Bingol said.

Computers accessing the Internet via other networks at the company's headquarters were unaffected.

The word "sucks" appeared after mentions of Chrysler, Ford Motor Co., Toyota Motor Corp., and Honda Motor Co. on any searches or references to those companies conducted on computers using the GM network. Web references were not permanently altered because the word was inserted only onto the displays of computers using that one network.

The word did not appear after mentions of Nissan Motor Co., Hyundai Motor Co., or Volkswagen AG.

Man Smashes Lamborghini Supercar

Ah, to have that kind of money....

Chinese Man Smashes Lamborghini with Sledgehammer: MyFoxDETROIT.com

(WJBK) - In China, a man fed up with a Lamborghini Gallardo he bought second-hand smashed it to smithereens with a sledgehammer, The Daily Mail reports.

The man reportedly bought that ride in February. After several arguments with the auto company about engine problems and maintenance issues, he smashed the nearly half-million dollar super car in protest outside his construction materials business.

Huge crowds gathered around and took pictures and videos as the man's employees decided to jump in and smash as well.

Barn-find Bugatti Type 38 makes seven times its estimate at auction

Huh?!?
A 'barn-find' Bugatti amounting to little more than a loose collection of bits has sold at auction for more than seven times its estimate.

Completely dismantled, incomplete and lacking its engine and body, the 1926 Bugatti Type 38 was expected to fetch only around £9,000 when it went under the hammer at a Bonhams sale in Australia.

But seven telephone bidders fought against six absentee bids and five people in the Sydney auction rooms for what was described as a 'restoration project'.

After a tense showdown, a mystery bidder - identified only as 'living in the northern hemisphere' - triumphed, with a bid of £68,000.

When Robert Glover, Bonhams' Head of Motor Cars Australia, informed the lady owner of the winning bid, said an auction house spokesman, there was a 'stunned silence followed by a tearful thanks'.

As the picture reveals, the new owner has quite a job on his or her hands. All that remains are four sorry-looking wheels, battered fenders bearing traces of red paint, the radiator, a headlamp, steering wheel, rear bumper, axles, other assorted components, seat shells and what is left of the doors.

A Type 38 in concours condition, however, would be worth around £200,000.
Bonhams says that a 'handful' of Type 38s found their way to Australia via the London Bugatti agent. The car in question was first owned by a Dr Feather of Roma, Queensland but passed through various hands until it was sold to the vendor in the 1960s, by which time it had already fallen into disrepair.

At the same auction, a 1925 Bentley 3- litre sold for £203,000, while a right -hand-drive 1949 Jaguar XK120 Alloy roadster changed hands for £154,000.

Toyota Uses Death To Pitch Cars At Chinese Customers

Huh?!? I could have thought of a few better mascots than this....
To Americans, Toyota offers "peace of mind." In China, Toyota offers a similar theme, except with cartoon versions of the Grim Reaper looming over its vehicles. It's OK, because sudden acceleration only happened in America.

The ad text hypes Toyota's safety features known as the Global Opportunity Assessment: "As a result, the most that the god of death can bring is only a shock like 'Jack in the box', but not any actual danger or harm."

See, Chinese buyers just don't draw the same associations between Toyotas and possibile death that a few Americans have because of the deaths linked to Toyotas. Besides, isn't that just the cutest Grim Reaper ever? It'd look great as an inflatable balloon floating over a few dealerships during the next Toyotathon. "Killer Savings!" "The Deal You Can't Refuse!" "Death, Taxes, Toyota!" Like driving a Corolla. [Copyranter/Ads Of The World]

Bullseye: poor Toyota Yaris smashed by a rock

All of you folks wonder how that rock smashed this poor Toyota Yaris. Apparently, a lorry loaded with rocks accidentally dropped the 8 tons stone on the small car. “The driver said he looked in his mirror and saw the rock slipping but it was on the car before he could do anything. If anyone had been in it, they would not have stood a chance.” said a photographer who saw the whole thing. The good news is that the Yaris was parked, but the bad news came after the driver saw it…

Dartz drops the idea of whale penis interior

File this one under "You've gotta be kidding me...."
After a month of protests, PROMBRON has decided to drop its plan to deck the interior upholstery of the Dartz Prombron, an ultra-luxury armored SUV, with whale penis leather. Apparently, the negative e-mails from Greenpeace, WWF and also Pamela Anderson, made it decide against its initial plan.

In a release, the company explained that it never intended to kill the whales and that the penis leather was chosen because it was pointed out to be the most expensive material that was deemed ideal for its luxury car. The Russian carmaker said that it has realized its mistake and instead, will now be focusing on the world’s most advanced nanotechnologies to achieve interior highest quality using artificial materials. The release went on to say that the company wanted to greet all whales, which it referred to as “sea brothers.” That’s a rather amusing turn of events considering what the company wanted to do with its reproductive organs. The carmaker said that it will be paying attention to the glass on its new car model that will be using special technology. Reportedly, these artificially grown crystals will reduce the glare of IR and UV rays.

“We have no any ideas to kill the whale or something like that. All we want - to make just luxury car. Real luxury car which will be world number one car. Our brand was started at 1869 when in Riga was opened Coach Factory or Russo Baltiysky Vagonnij Zavod - PBVZ, and first products was luxury train coaches. At 1907 was made a decision to open Car Department, and at 1909 first car left factory - the name of this car was RussoBalt. This was luxury and sport cars. At 1911 specially for Monaco Rally car got french style name - RussoBaltique. At 1912 factory made world first 4 x 4 wheel drive car, and at 1914 - armored car. All we want to unite luxury and armoring traditions of RussoBalt factory in one car, which brand celebrated 100 years now. At 1922 RussoBalt was renamed to PROMBRON’ (ex.RussoBalt).

Man allegedly takes car on 1,000-mile test drive

AP) JANESVILLE, Wis. (AP) - A Massachusetts man who allegedly kidnapped a car salesman during a test drive and drove the vehicle more than 1,000 miles was in custody in Wisconsin. Authorities said a Wisconsin State Patrol trooper pulled over a 32-year-old man near Edgerton, Wis. on Friday for speeding, reckless driving and operating a motor vehicle without owner consent.

The suspect is expected to be extradited back to Massachusetts to face charges of kidnapping, larceny of a motor vehicle and unarmed robbery.

The incident began Thursday afternoon when the man and a Honda car salesman went on a test drive but the man refused to turn back around. The salesman was able to get out of the car when it slowed at a tollbooth near the Massachusetts state line.

News of the Weird: Haunted Honda offered for sale in L.A.

A driver is selling a very special 1992 Honda Accord on the Los Angeles craigslist — after spending thousands to fix it up, he reckons it’s still haunted.

Some of the car’s special features: “Seems to be possessed by a demon or some sort of entity. Makes low mumbling backwards-like indistinguishable talking sounds through the speakers, which aren’t even hooked up to anything. There is no stereo in it, so it can’t be anything to do with that. When you get into the car, it makes you have odd feeling like you wanna leave fast to get out [of] the car and also there’s cold spot inside the rear seat makes you uneasy.”
He’s asking US$6,500, but he’ll take half that if you twist his arm.

Fair disclosure: The seller warns potential buyers that the vehicle is an attempted murderer: “It makes no sense at all, but it has almost killed me many of times while I was driving to work and school... Please take this car out of my life. May God Bless You & Have Mercy On Your Soul!”

Cars Vs. People: What's More Fuel Efficient?

Ever wondered whether walking was more resource efficient than driving? Although we know we poop more when we exercise, this chart finally helps us to answer that question a bit more scientifically.
It turns out the human body is an extraordinarily efficient machine — much more so than even the most efficient car. Which gets us to wondering — shouldn't we be running our cars on people or Soylent Green?
While we ponder that question — take a look at the full chart here.

Nissan Backed Toyota Dealership Closes

A Nissan backed Toyota dealership, I don't know what to think of that....
The recently opened Superior Toyota of Oakland hoped to be a rare example of an auto dealership that could swim against the harsh economic tide.

On Tuesday, employees were informed the 200,000-square-foot dealership at 8181 Oakport St. at Hegenberger Road would be shut down at the close of business Tuesday. It came as a surprise as the grand opening of the site was to be scheduled soon, and cars were being placed in the window fronting Interstate 880 this week.

Even a huge sign near Oracle Arena declared the site "now open."
While it's a Toyota dealership, owner Michael Kahn said Nissan actually provided the financing for the new building.
